Measuring hardness

Find Measuring Hardness. Some materials are harder than others. The Brinell hardness test entails measuring the diameter of indentation caused by a constant concentrated force applied by a steel or carbide spherical indenter on a test specimen.


When you measure hardness, you press some hard and small object (the indenter) into the material to be tested with sufficient force to leave a permanent impression. The means that you always deform plastically or fracture you specimen locally.

The "size" of the indentation gives you the hardness number. This measure is widely used but is just conventional index. For example, a tool in HSS, whose hardness is HRC, the mark will have a depth of 0. The equipment automatically measures this depth and gives on the display the hardness value.


Hardness is a characteristic of a material, not a fundamental physical property. Brinell Hardness Test is most commonly used to test materials that have a structure that is too coarse or that have a surface that is too rough to be tested using another test method (for example parts made by castings and forging).


Permanent deformation is also called plastic deformation.

While elastic deformation means that a material changes its shape only during the application of force, a resulting plastic deformation means that the material will not return to its original shape. Take the plastic cap off of your test meter to uncover the notched end used to test the water. Fill a small cup halfway with water so you’re able to submerge the end of the meter. Put the notched end of the meter into the water completely so it can measure the hardness.


If a test for hard water is measured in parts per million or milligrams per liter you can take the total hardness level and divide it by 17. The Shore durometer is a device for measuring the hardness of a material, typically of polymers, elastomers, and rubbers. Higher numbers on the scale indicate a greater resistance to indentation and thus harder materials. Lower numbers indicate less resistance and softer materials.

The usual method to achieve a hardness value is to measure the depth or area of an indentation left by an indenter of a specific shape, with a specific force applied for a specific time.

Shore hardness is a measure of the resistance of material to indentation by spring-loaded indenter. The higher the number, the greater the resistance. The hardness testing of plastics is most commonly measured by the Shore (Durometer) test or Rockwell hardness test.


Both methods measure the resistance of the plastic toward indentation. The most commonly used gauges for measuring the hardness of rubber are the durometer and the IRHD meter. The hardness of rubber measured by means of a durometer is expressed in the unit Shore A. A flattened cone is pressed through a spring into the surface of the rubber.


More simply put, when using a fixed force (load) and a given indenter, the smaller the indentation, the harder the material. It is defined as the resistance to indentation, and it is determined by measuring the permanent depth of the indentation.


The Shore OO Scale measures extremely soft materials like gels (think of gel insoles).
