Charging car battery

Many battery chargers deliver two to six amps (some allow you to choose the amperage level) and will take at least several hours to recharge a dead car battery. Read the instructions that come with. Pick a charger that is appropriate for your battery and purposes. Get a car battery charger.


Most chargers will work for all types of batteries except Gel Cell batteries. There are fast chargers that can charge your battery quickly or even provide you with a jump start, as well as "trickle" chargers that provide a slow but longer lasting charge.

There are two ways to charge a car battery : with the alternator, or with an external charger. Under normal circumstances, the alternator charges the battery whenever the engine is running.


When a battery dies, then an external charger is the best way to charge it back up. Many drivers only drive their cars for short distances, and this means that the car uses more energy from the battery than the alternator can produce.


You may end up with an empty battery when you least expect it. When the charge given by the battery exceeds that which the alternator returns, there is a slow drain that eventuallyin a weakened or dead battery.


Connect the positive lead from the car battery charger to the positive terminal on your battery. This will likely be red with a plus sign.


Connect the negative lead from the car battery charger to the negative terminal on your battery.

How to charge your battery : Set your battery charger based on your needs. How long does it take to charge a car battery? High speed charging is usually 6-10amps, whereas low speed charging is typically 2-3amps which is usual for a gradual overnight charge. To charge a dead car battery, pop the hood of your vehicle.


Connect end of the red positive jumper cable to the dead battery, then connect the other end to the charged battery. Then, connect end of the negative jumper cable to the black negative terminal on the charged battery and attach the other end to a grounded metal component on the car with the dead battery.


Generally, it’s the red cord which is meant for the positive terminal with a plus sign at the battery point. Normally, if the voltage of your battery is below 11.


If the battery has ten amps charge rate, it will take six hours to fully charge. Charging a car battery overnight? The alternator will charge the car’s battery by providing it with electricity.

You can either do this with the battery in situ, or you can take the battery out first. A completely charged Volt battery provides 12. Volts, whereas a fully discharged battery will emit 11. In any case it should be done away from a wall and with protection under it in case of a leak.


It would be better to charge it in your garage or outside. Cars have gotten a lot more complicated electrically over the years. It also provides the initial sparkto the spark plugs of a petrol car.
