Setting planer knives

This way of setting the blades works with any size of planer. From huge machine shop surfaces to a small hand planer. Look at the two working surfaces of the planer, the tables.


The infeed table is at the front that you set your depth with, and the outfeed table is under the handle, that you hold firmly to the freshly cut timber. One of the best and most accurate setting jigs is the magnetic setting jig IGM Professional Magnetic Knife Setting Jig, type MUN-001.


This magnetic setting jig will help you to simply, accurately and quickly set up a planer knife into the required depth.

Setting the machine ¶ Once the knives are set, install the indicator in the other base with the plunger tip up. Drop the planer’s bed until the bed-resting gauge can be easily placed directly beneath the cutterhead. Crank up the bed until the plunger tip just touches the bottom of the cutterhead. I have the planer pal and it just attaches to the drum with magnets.


I use a plate of aluminum to set planer and jointer knives. Set the machine or tables so the lowest knife just hits and skims the surface.

With the other knives snug, not loose or tight, I rotate them until they touch the plate. Set planer knives quickly and accurately with these magnetized setting jigs. The jig holds knives tightly in position while both hands are free to adjust the jigs and cutter head.

Find the lowest point of the knife (cutting circle) and set the dial on zero. Put the knives in a bit high and put some tension on the gib screws. Take a piece of maple maybe 1" square and 5" long and a small hammer to tap the maple block on the edge of the knife to lower it down.


When all are set, I tighten them and re-check the setting. This jig provides convenient hands-free positioning of the knives allowing you to use both hands to tighten the gib nuts. There are several types of planer - setting jigs. The most common is a device that has the angle of the knife included in the jig.


If the angle is different the knife height can vary. If the knife is ground at the proper angle then it will fit properly in the jig.

With this type of jig, the knife is held well during the tightening process. Rotate the cutterhead by hand.


When the knife moves the block about ⁄ 8", as shown, without lifting it off the table, you have the correct knife-height setting. When finishe tighten all the gib bolts. Reset the infeed table to your desired cut depth. Repeat for all knives.


The springs are the clue to how you should set the knives. Leave the four inner locking screws loose and then adjust the two outer ones to be just loose enough to let the knife move up and down with as little extra play as possible. Ryobi 12" portable planer knives, knife set for the AP12.
