Cutting a pipe

This Old House plumbing and heating contractor Richard Trethewey shares tips for cutting virtually any plumbing pipe. See below for a shopping list and tool.

Draw horizontal cutting lines onto the pipe where you want to make the cuts, using a light-colored piece of chalk or a crayon. To mark a straight cutting line all the way around the pipe (recommended for saw or grinder cuts), wrap a sheet of printer or notebook paper around the pipe (you may need two pieces taped together), and align the overlapping edges, then trace along the edge of the paper.

When using a metal pipe cutter, align the tool around the marked place on the galvanized pipe and rotate so that the wheel cuts deeper into the pipe until severed.

When using an angle grinder or reciprocating saw, start the tool before contacting the pipe, then slowly lower the cutting disc until it contacts the surface. I am a first year apprentice electrician.

When cutting a piece of pipe, you should keep the torch pointed toward the center line of the pipe. Start the cut at the top and cut down one side.
