Handle hammer

A traditional hand-held hammer consists of a separate head and a handle, which can be fastened together by means of a special wedge made for the purpose, or by glue, or both. This two-piece design is often used to combine a dense metallic striking head with a non-metallic mechanical-shock-absorbing handle (to reduce user fatigue from repeated strikes).


I replaced the handle on my Boiler Scaling hammer, but you could use the same process to replace the handle on pretty much any hammer with a metal head and a wooden handle. Handle Saver HSLarge.


So here is how I refurbished the hammer head and replaced the handle. Supplies: Section of broken shovel handle.

Hammer wedges "Spring Oak" wood stain. Tools: Angle grinder. Zirconia flap disc. Typically they have a broken or missing handle.

These are made out of a single piece of steel that starts at the head and ends at the base of the handle. Alright so in between the wooden and steel handles we have fiberglass.


Fiberglass handles are still fairly new to the market but have been quickly replacing wooden handles left and right. Some stores have even gone as far as not even stocking the wooden handles anymore. When the handle just starts to fit into the hammer hea press the handle in by hand as far as you can. Then take another hammer and give a couple of solid hits on the back of the handle.


Do not hit it too hard. Tap the head off of the handle and observe the marks where the tool is dragging. Take a file and clean up this interference area.

The fiberglass handle is tough, yet lightweight, which leaves most of the hammer 's weight in the hammerhead. When you need power, grip the hammer near the handle’s end.
